BUS3011 Developing Cross-Cultural Capability - University of Northampton

The Assessment Aim:
The purpose of this assignment is to immerse the student into a possible role in a company. Level 6 students will approach the job market within six months. This assignment seeks to prepare them for a possible value-add they can add to their future employer. It shall, further, expose students to discover HR-related areas that are yet to be covered in the remaining 11 weeks of classroom time, and, hence, strengthen motivation and interest in the subsequent topics. This assignment, also, emphasises value-add of knowledge and the customisation of this knowledge for other audiences. It is, therefore, essential that the student writes the report with the target audience in mind, in this case the HR head of the company. Finally, the assignment seeks to assess the comprehension and understanding of the first 11 weeks of the module, during which essential cultural concepts and important cross-cultural theories, including cultural profiling are addressed.

Assessment Task:
"In few months you are seeking for jobs after your finish this module and you graduate. Consider you will find a job in a small SME here in Northampton. The company manufactures shoes in Northampton and considers expanding production to China, Vietnam or Ethiopia.

The HR head approaches you and asks you to prepare a 2,500-word business report on the opportunities and risks of a partial shift of manufacturing that are associated with a move to any of these countries. The HR head is exclusively interested in the value that you can offer in the field of Human Resources. The associated issues around legal, marketing, purchasing, logistics, and others, are handled by other departments. So please focus your report on the cross-cultural and HR-related considerations that emerge with such a shift of production. Please use a high share of academic literature and, also, make sufficient references to any of the three cultural profiling researchers (Hall, Hofstede, Trompenaars)."

Type of Assessment
The requirement is to produce a 2,500-word document that is structured and offers content in business report format. Students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the difference between an essay and a business report.

Requirements and components of the task
Since the report is written for a senior member of a company, strong adherence to formally, correctness and spelling and typos are expected and desired. Students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the expectations toward a highly formatted piece of professional writing. Students need to understand that they are expected to offer interpretative, analytical and reflective value, and that an escalation of those expectations exist. Students, shall, therefore, familiarise themselves with the differences between description, analysis, reflection, and synthesis.
