Operations and Project Management Assignment -

Scenario 1: Using an organisation you know well and can obtain information on or using your place of work, you are required to review and critique the effectiveness of operations management principles, and apply the concept of continuous improvement to the organisation.

Note: The organisation that you choose for the purpose of this assignment may include, current employer, previous employers or an organisation that you know or are familiar with.

This will then be presented as a report to the CEO and should include the following tasks:

TASK 1

a) Conduct a review and critique of the implementation of operations management principles within an organisational context.

b) Prepare a continuous improvement plan based on the review and critique of operations management principles within an organisational context.

c) Analyse the effectiveness of a continuous improvement plan using appropriate theories, concepts and/or models.

TASK 2

a) Apply appropriate theories, concepts and/or models to justify strategies of a continuous improvement plan for achieving improved efficiency.

b) Review and critique the implementation of operations management in relation to Six Sigma methodology and Lean principles.

Scenario 2: Using the project case study you have been given here below, you are required to apply the project life cycle (PLC) to the given project, and to review and critique the application of the PLC. You are to provide theoretical and/or conceptual arguments to justify the use of project methodologies, tools and leadership within the given project.

Case study - Heathrow Terminal 3 Integrated Baggage facility, Heathrow Airport Ltd.

The way in which baggage is handled has a huge impact on Heathrow's effectiveness as Europe's leading hub airport and on the airlines and passengers that use it.

The airport's four terminals need to be able to cope with some 110 million bags a year, which calls for a system that is fast, safe, reliable and tough. Historically, baggage handling had been adapted during years of expansion with no unified, centralised approach.

A key feature of the £11 billion investment over the past decade has been work to improve baggage handling. The next major project was to build a dedicated system for Terminal 3 (T3) and integrated to Terminal 5 (T5). These two terminals cope with more than a third of Heathrow connections and in 2014, T3's old system alone handled over 10 million items of baggage.

The IT would be the 'brain' behind the Terminal 3 Integrated Baggage system (T3IB), now hailed as the most sophisticated and effective airport baggage handling system in the world.

Delivering this innovative system in a new, four-storey building the size of two football pitches without interrupting live airport operations required an innovative approach to project management and stakeholder participation from start to finish.

TASK 3

a) Apply each stage of the Project Life Cycle (PLC) to the Heathrow Terminal 3 Integrated Baggage facility project, producing necessary supporting documentation for completing the project (e.g. a business case, project plan, work breakdown structure, etc.

b) Review and critique the effectiveness of the PLC in application to the Heathrow Terminal 3 Integrated Baggage facility project using appropriate theories, concepts and models.

c) Critically evaluate the PLC through practical and theoretical exploration of its effectiveness.

TASK 4

a) Analyse the rationale for the project methodologies, tools and leadership within the PLC for the Heathrow Terminal 3 Integrated Baggage facility given project.

b) Critically analyse how the use of appropriate theories, concepts and models in the PLC will differentiate between large and small-scale projects.

Learning Outcomes -

  • Review and critique the effectiveness of operations management principles.
  • Apply the concept of continuous improvement in an operational context.
  • Apply the Project Life Cycle (PLC) to a given context.
  • Review and critique the application of the PLC used in a given project.
