Assignment - Short reports

Learning Outcome 1: Understand the physical principles underlying the operation of hospital equipment and solve problems relating to practical applications

Learning Outcome 2: Interpret qualitative and quantitative data in hospital equipment relating to practical applications and communicate the results of the work by written assignment incorporating structured coherent argument.

Assessment Tasks

LO1 - Part 1
Complete questions 1 & 2 fluid mechanics and heat transfer problems. Marks will be deducted or not given where there is no clear workings or explanation.

LO1 - Part 2
Explain the process of base-exchange water softening. Give suitable chemical formulae and diagrams where appropriate. (100 words)

LO2 - Part 1
Consider the function, advantages and disadvantages of pressure and flow measurement methods (1 of each) found on your plant equipment. Produce a report in which you analyse their expected level of accuracy and reliability and where possible use quantitative data, numerical examples and diagrams for clarification. (500 words, 23%)

LO2 - Part 2
Produce a short report in which you assess the thermal insulation of a heated building or large equipment by approximating expected losses and discuss the value of potential improvements. Necessary simplifying assumptions should be made wherever appropriate (i.e single plane transmission) but clearly stated. (400 words, 22%)

LO2 - Part 3
Investigate the action of metallic corrosion typically encountered within your building fabric and/or mechanical plant. Briefly explain design features found, or those which could be used, to improve corrosion resistance. Your narrative should give some detail at an atomic level. (500 words, 25%)

LO1 Assignment Problems

Question 1A:
Water is pumped over a distance of 200m through a 1" LCS pipe of ID 26.64mm with absolute roughness (ε) of 0.09 at an expected demand of 3 tonnes per hour. Assuming no other system changes, what would be the expected reduction in required pump outlet pressure if the pipe was replaced with 32mm HDPE-PN10 of ID 26.2mm and absolute roughness 0.0015. Take dynamic viscosity and density of the water to be 0.001 N sm-2 and 1000 kg m-3 respectively?

Question 1B:
It is decided to replace the pipe in Question 1 with the HDPE alternative. The new supply will also use x16 90° elbows and two ball valve isolators at each end. Losses for the elbows are given as an equivalent pipe length of 23xID for each one and the ball valves are each given ‘k' friction factors of 13 when fully open. If the pipe discharges into the bottom of a tank with a free surface 12 m above the pump connection what would be the necessary pressure immediately at pump outlet?

Question 2A:
A 1 tonne (capacity) vented steam boiler feed water tank, initially at its CW supply temperature of 10°C, is heated by direct injection steam at a rate of 2 kg per minute to achieve its controlled temperature of 80°C. By reference to standard steam tables, estimate the time required for the tank to heat up. Assume losses to convection/ conduction are equal to the surplus sensible heat of the injected steam (100 to 80°C). Clearly state all simplifying assumptions and sourced data.

Question 2B:
The feed-water tank in Question 3 is a stainless steel cylinder of 994 mm ID and 1.5 metre deep with wall thickness of 3mm. It is fully insulated with 50mm Rockwool. At steady state it is topped up at a rate of 200 kg per hour. What would be the estimated steam injection rate to maintain steady feed water temp?

Make the following accompanying assumptions:
Boiler room mean temperature - 28°C
Outer convective heat transfer coefficient - 20 Wm-2K-1
Inner convective heat transfer coefficients - water/air space
3000/1000 Wm-2K-1
All other coefficients should be self-sourced and clearly stated

Your work should clearly demonstrate an understanding of these topics, making clear references to credible academic theory, national and international standards, and/or commissioned and published reports.
