Introduction

A Tangram is a geometrical puzzle consisting of seven flat shapes cut from a square, which can be arranged to form various other shapes. The seven pieces are:

- 2 large right triangles
- 1 medium right triangle
- 2 small right triangles
- 1 square
- 1 parallelogram

The objective of the puzzle is to form a specific shape (given only an outline) using all seven pieces, which may not overlap. The seven flat shapes are usually coloured into seven different colours, a plain example is
shown in the figure below:

Figure 1: Square

There are no set colours for a Tangram, i.e. they can be any colour of your choice. There are thousands of different shapes that can be formed using the Tangram. A example is shown below:

Figure 2: House

You may find more examples by searching Tangram online. Alternatively, should you be interested, you are most welcome to design your own.

Requirements

In this coursework, you are required to do the following:

A). Write a computer programme using OpenGL to:

1). create a square using the Tangram pieces as shown in Fig.1 and colour the seven pieces of the geometric shapes (please choose a different colour for each piece) of your choice;

2). create a shape that you would like to form using the Tangram such as the one given in Fig.2 (you can search/design your own shape, but please do not use another square or a trivial variation of a square! The new shape created will also need to require movements of all seven pieces of the Tangram from a square, also see requirement 3) below, and a flip over of the parallelogram.);

3). create an animation of the seven geometric shapes' movement from the original square created in requirement 1). to the shape of your choice for requirement 2). All seven Tangram pieces need to be displaced. The movements have to be smooth and clear; and

4). make sure that the code are well commented.

B). Write a report (max four A4 pages ) to:

5). explain your design and implementation process and any challenges you came across, as well as how they were overcome at the end; and

6). include a thoughtful discussion of limitations of your own work, and provide some ideas for further improvement.

C). Demonstrate creativity and attention to details by

7). including more advanced graphic features such as lighting, texture and viewing, etc,

8). and being creative in making the animation appealing.
