Aims and Relevance -

The Integrated Management Project is the culmination of the MBA course. It is designed to simulate a realistic management situation, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to use the knowledge and skills acquired through the taught elements of the course in a focused piece of research.

Its purpose is to bring together for you all the taught elements of the course to reinforce their interrelationship and to provide an experience which enables you to move forward from the understanding of a discrete knowledge base to synthesising and exploring new areas in more detail. In this it simulates the working environment where individuals are constantly required to combine knowledge in different ways and increase their understanding in different areas. It is intended to provide you with an ability to apply your learning to an aspect (normally) from your own or an equivalent workplace.

The Integrated Management Project is designed to give you the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of management and business as well as the skills essential to effective operation in a corporate, business, public sector or not-for-profit environment. In particular the aims of this unit are to enable you to:

• Take the knowledge, understanding and skills you have been developing in individual units and use them in a complex, multifunctional situation.
• Formulate a problem
• Identify information needs
• Research
• Retrieve information
• Synthesise information
• Produce creative solutions
• Produce a well-argued and supported report in response to the problem identified
• Work effectively in a group
• Work effectively in a time constrained situation
• Reflect on the learning achieved through the process

Business issues are very often messy and unstructured and their solutions may not be obvious. The methods and theories that you have studied during your MBA are intended to enable you to have the necessary armoury to improve your own working practice. During this unit you will further develop and link these skills as you will be required.

Learning outcomes - On completion of this unit you should be able to:

1. Demonstrate the following knowledge and understanding

• Critical appreciation of techniques for analysing complex business issues and techniques for structuring solutions to complex issues.

2. Demonstrate the following skills and abilities

• Critically analyse and research complex business problems.
• Select and successfully apply a range of appropriate techniques to identify issues and develop integrated solutions.
• Self-reflect on your progress with the project and lessons learnt for future development.

Assessment details - You will produce an independent piece of work that is based on independent research and reflection. The output is in three stages that are listed and described below:

Assessment 1 - Main Report - two sections

Section 1 - You will produce a report that:

Identifies an issue in an organisation (ideally your own) that has a multiple and varied approaches to its resolution. The issue need not be one of failure but may be a challenge facing an organisation. This should be a current or impending but not a past issue. You will identify and integrate a range of theories and techniques drawn from multiple appropriate disciplines from your MBA in the creation of appropriate solutions. (8,000 words).

Section 2 - You will produce a critical review of the literature that:

Critically evaluates the concepts used in Part 1 and justifies their selection for your analysis and solution generation. This selection will reflect the debates in the literature about the concepts used.

Assessment 2 - Reflective Report

You will produce a reflective account that:

Critically evaluates your capabilities at managing the process of applying knowledge to producie the Project and reflects upon your development and future needs as a practitioner based on your learning during the Project. (2,000 words).

In Assessment 1 you will need to:

• Identify an appropriate problem capable of being researched, select and apply appropriate integrated techniques in order to evaluate the issue and identify and propose.
• Critically evaluate, to a limited extent, the tools, frameworks and theories from a wide range of disciplines that were used.

In Assessment 2 you will need to:

• Produce an adequate reflective account in which you assess your ability to complete the project and show consideration of personal development and impact on future self.
