Unit 19 Electrical and Electronic Principles - Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Engineering

Assignment - Electronic circuits, semiconductor devices and its applications

Learning Outcome 1: Describe the basis of semiconductor action, and its application to simple electronic devices.

Learning Outcome 2: Explain the difference between digital and analogue electronics, describing simple applications for each.

Assignment Brief

Scenario
Micro Electronics Ltd. is involved in designing and manufacturing of Electronic circuits for their clients. As a Research engineer, you have been asked to research about the behaviour of semiconductor devices to carry out the following task.

Task 1
Critically evaluate the performance of the semiconductor devices listed below in terms of simple semiconductor theory and suggesting appropriate applications for each. Furthermore, describe and evaluate the semiconductor devices in terms of simple semiconductor theory.
(i) BJT
(ii) Field Effect Transistor

Demonstrate the action of the semiconductor devices used in the following circuits by using Appropriate simulation software package.

Describe the behaviour of a p-n junction in terms of semiconductor behaviour.

Task 2
Furthermore, your manger has asked you to develop an understanding about the difference between analogue and digital electronics, and their respective applications. To reflect yourself, he has asked to perform the following tasks.

Critically evaluate and compare the applications of analogue and digital electronics, in terms of their relative advantages, explaining with three examples where each might be applied.

Describe the relative applications and benefits of analogue and digital electronics, explaining with example where each might be applied.
A burglar alarm has a sensor on the door (A), another sensor on the window (B), a movement sensor in the lounge (C) and an alarm set switch (D). The alarm (Q) should sound if the alarm set switch is set and either the door sensor or the movement sensor or the window sensor (or all three) is activated.
i) Write the truth table for the system.
ii) Write a logic expression for when Q is logic 1.
iii) Convert the Boolean equation into logic gates.

Explain amplifier characteristics about its gain, frequency response, input and output resistance, effect of source and load resistance.

Explain the difference between digital and analogue electronics.
