7CS512 Business Analytics - University of Derby

Assignment - Portfolio

Learning Outcome 1: Identify and critically evaluate the key requirements for effective data management, analysis and presentation to meet users' needs.
Learning Outcome 2: Develop a small management information reporting system that meets the users' needs using a prototyping / Agile approach in the SAS programming environment

Tasks
This module encompasses three assessment tasks as follows.

• Research Presentation - You are required to work in pairsto research a SAS Proc procedure and should make a presentation in class. This presentation is worth 20% of your final mark of the module.
• SAS based MIS - individually, you will design, construct and demonstrate a small SAS-based Management Information System (MIS). This is worth 50% of your module mark.
• Story Telling Report - You will be analysing a raw dataset. Using the tools of your choice (other than SAS), you are required to analyse the data and present a short descriptive report about the dataset. This is worth 30% of your final module mark.

Detailed information of the tasks can be found in the individual task descriptions.

You can obtain detailed feedback on your progress at any time during the module by asking your tutor.

Task 1: Research Presentation

You will work in pairs for this research task. You are required to choose and research a SAS Proc procedure which can be used for data analytics. The procedure you choose CANNOT be a simple Proc step (such as Proc MEANS), this should include complex analytics techniques such as prediction modelling, descriptive modelling etc. You mustconfirm your chosen procedure with your tutor before starting your research. Student pairs cannot work on the same topics, so the topics will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. The topics for Task 1 can include but not limited to the following.
• Proc ARIMA
• Proc AUTOREG
• Proc ROBUSTREG
• Proc CLUSTER
• Proc FASTCLUS
• Proc ANOVA
• Proc CANCORR

This task has a primary objective of sharing knowledge among the peers. The knowledge you acquire from this task would be useful when developing your MIS system for Task 2.

Task 2: SAS based MIS
This section is strictly individual. You are required to demonstrate how you can apply what you are learning, by constructing a small data analysis system. Search for and download a dataset that is of interest to you. Please feel free to discuss it with your tutor before you use it. The dataset needs to be sizeable both in terms of the number of records (depth - a few thousand records) and the number of dimensions (variables - width). You are required to design an analysis system and conduct your analysis using SAS. You will be using appropriate SAS procedures and conduct advanced analytics to uncover trends and patterns, and present the results through the developed menu system. This will be a live demonstration, so your system is expected to run with full automation. Lack of automation will reduce your grades. The results of your analysis will be assessed based on the following.

• Automation - 10%
• Use of Procedures - 10%
• MIS Design - 10%
• Interpretation of Results - 10%
• Presentation - 10%

Task 3: Story Telling Report

This section is strictly individual. You will analyse the same dataset used in Task 2. You are required to understand the dataset and present useful statistical inferences about the raw data. You can choose any analytics environment for this task other than SAS. You are required to write a short report of 4 pages excluding abstract, references or appendices, for telling a story about the data. The maximum number of pages should not be more than 9.The purpose of ‘telling a story' here implies you to explain the nature of the data, what inferences you are looking for and the insights extracted, and how they can be useful. You must include screenshots of your analysis from the chosen environment, and should provide your insights and inferences of your analysis in your report. This report is due on 11th May 2021, 23:59 hours, in turnitin. The assessment will be based on the following.

• Use of procedures - 10%
• Interpretation - 10%
• Presentation - 5%
