The shipping company, who are previously unknown to you, have shortlisted you to act as their onsite surveyor following a recommendation from an undisclosed source. The purpose of the survey is to ensure that the vessel is constructed as per the new construction contract agreed between the shipyard and the ship owner. It is envisaged that the contract will last for eighteen months. You will be the only surveyor representing the shipping company.

Explain the steps which you would take to encourage the ship owner to select you, instead of your competitors, for this long term contract. You may consider, for example, your professional values and fees.

The shipowner subsequently decides to appoint you as their onsite surveyor. Discuss the appointment process which should be followed from the time of this decision to the point of your formal appointment.

Part Three
Considering that you will become engaged in a single contract for eighteen months, you will require to ensure that your sole trader business remains financially viable for that period. Explain how you would plan your business finances for this period and describe the principal financial statements and documents which you would utilise for this purpose.
